CHICKLETS SPLIT AT SEASON OPENER

On Saturday 13th the Chicklets began their 2017 season with a road trip to visit the Pee Wees in St. Pölten. Under cloudy skies game 1 started as planned with Angela Reiter in the circle and Chelsea Robinson behind the plate keeping the Pee Wees hitters quiet. The Chicklets took a 7-1 lead that seemed to be quite comfortable, but the weather decided to change and so did the game. After a 30 minutes rain delay the momentum of the game was gone and the score was 7-6 after 4 innings. The Pee Wees started to find some gaps in the Chicklets defense and a hard hit groundball into the knee of Chicklets shortstop Verena Ponweiser didn´t make things any better. On the other side the Chicklets bats stayed quiet. The Pee Wees led by three runs after the 6th and three easy outs later the ballgame was over. „We gave away the game so it´s a tough loss. The Pee Wees earn the win because the kept on fighting theirselves back in the game“ said coach Filarowski. „We have been a bit unlucky with the weather as it started to rain right when we took defense and that we had to take Verena out of the game. But we still had everything to win it and didn´t do it. We have to learn from that, adjust ourselves and come back better in game 2…“

With that being said, the Chicklets jumped out of the dugout in a completely different style. Chelsea Robinson giving her debut as Chicklets shortstop, Ina Kaindl behind the plate and Paula „the strikezone“ on the rubber. Skies cleared off and the sunshine and the run of play raised a smile on her face that grew bigger and bigger as the game kept on. Finally the Chicklets began to hit and Chelsea, Ina, Angela and Louise McGarry fired some extra basehits through the Pee Wees defense to score some 16 runs in 4 innings. On the other side the defense now worked well with our import player showing her skills on a diving stop at 2B. The Pee Wees baserunners got all stranded and on a weak ground ball back to pitcher Paula she ended the game herself after 4 with a shutout.

„First games in the season are always a bit shaky, so i don´t think game 1 is such a big deal. But now the Chicklets have to get back to work at practice and adjust. We don´t want to play like that again. We go step by step and we will improve. We´ve had a glimpse of the skills and versatility of Chelsea Robinson and with all players available this will make us more competitive for sure. With Kaycee having her stuff all packed and ready to fly in we are exited for the next games to come“.
